BUILD 2012 conference SharePoint and Office sessions

I'm not normally one for re-blogging existing web content but I haven't see these sessions mentioned that much and I think they are excellent so...

The Microsoft Build Conference this year contained loads of Office/SharePoint 2013 sessions focussed on the new App model. If you're thinking of developing some Apps or just want to understand more about the possibilities, the architecture or the security of Apps - definitely give these sessions a watch. All the BUILD sessions are hosted on the Channel9 web site.

Summer, Gooseberry wine and Windows 8

EX 475 Homeserver

Well, its been a while since I last blogged, lots of things have kept me busy and given me too many excuses not to post - London Triathlon, making Gooseberry wine (1st demijohn above), working on some SharePoint/K2 contracts, holidays, testing SP Term Cloud on SP 2013, new software projects...

With the summer finally over (even had some snow in St.Albans this morning) and the release of Windows 8, Office 2015, SharePoint 2015, etc there is lots of new technology to get me going again so I've started a few new side projects, teaching myself the new App model and doing some more sandbox dev. I also had a few SharePoint 2010 blog posts prepared when events (summer...) caused me to go AWOL so I'll publish them starting with a series about preparing a Managed Metadata demo for Office 365.

Leaving SharePoint for a while, I've just upgraded my old EX475 Windows Home Server to Windows 8 to act as a ...

Inspiration from history for the information architect

From Cave Paintings to the Internet

Last week I posted a link to a lovely info graphic on the history of information organization.

This week I spotted a website that could have provided some of the underlying data.

It's Jeremy Norman’s From Cave Paintings to the Internet – Chronological and Thematic Studies on the History of Information

The site gives plenty of great facts discovered via beautiful category driven browse interfaces.

With annotated references to discoveries, developments of a social, scientific, and theoretical nature, and references to physical books and other documents, it arranges selected historical examples and recent developments of the methods used to record, distribute, exchange, organize, store, and search for information.

The site lists the first general subject index from 1548. All well and good but can it be imported into a SharePoint term set ;)

As someone who's worked mostly in the information management space its encouraging to think the profession has survived for a couple of thousand years already. Should be plenty of work to feed the kids for the next few years.

Now if only I can keep up with the pace of technology change...

Welcome to metaEngine...

Welcome to the blog.

Hi, my name is Peter Collins. My aim in launching this blog is to provide more information related to the metaEngine SharePoint 2010 solution (soon to be solutions...). The articles will aim to support the install, configuration and customisation of the solutions and publish answers to any common issues customers have.

For the last 10 years I’ve been working with SharePoint and its associated technologies in a range of roles including developer, consultant, project manager, software architect, etc... For the last 7 years I’ve been responsible for metaEngine solutions (SharePoint 2003, 2007) that have provided add-ons to SharePoint for taxonomy based labelling, categorisation and navigation.

With SharePoint 2010, taxonomy labeling is provided out of the box by the Managed Metadata feature so the metaEngine solutions for SharePoint 2010 focus on extending the Managed Metadata capability and generally improving findability and information access.

For the past year or so I've worked a lot with SharePoint 2010 user (sandbox) solutions. For all the restrictions they place on developers I really think they have the ability to deliver enhancements in a timely and safe manner.

Obviously from a small business point of view they also have ...
